The sculpture is based off an old amusement park ride: the parachute jump. There is one still standing at Coney Island in NY. They are beautiful structures, tall, thin, steel. Incredible silhouette on the skyline. The drippy red resin serves to emphasize the structure's function, which was essentially to allow gravity to act on a person. The drips cascade down the structure just as a parachute rider would fall.
